2010: A Musical Odyssey

YouTube via audibleobsession | December 11, 2010 |

"Audible Obsession began one year ago as a personal project - a means of exploring music and releasing myself from the restrictions that inevitably fall on all of us when the creative process combines with disillusions of commercial success. It's been a fulfilling journey: I've explored new styles and techniques, embraced my passion for synthesizers, and finally threw caution to the wind by picking up the microphone. But perhaps the most fulfilling was meeting like minded musicians who shared my audible obsession and decided to jump on board for the ride.

I look forward to sharing the fruits of my labor in early 2011 with the release of a debut EP, and many more releases following shortly after. In the meantime, the following video is a sampler of some of the current studio demos that I'm working on, as well as a few recordings of the whole band playing live.

I'd like to thank everyone who's watched and commented on my synth related videos so far, and to Matrixsynth for always making my day by posting them. Hope you guys will join me in 2011 for another musical odyssey."

SubtractiveLAD Kindred

SubtractiveLAD Kindred

"Now 7 albums in, Stephen Hummel has decided to push his SubtractiveLAD project into seemingly uncharted territory. Fans of Hummel's work know that at any given moment his songs can thoughtfully veer into more "classic" electronic music territory. On previous efforts, artists such as Boards of Canada and Brian Eno have been name-dropped as stylistic signposts but now such widescreen chill-room workouts are only one part of Hummel's big picture. Hummel has also injected elements of Jazz, Shoegaze and even Industrial into his works and excels in making such incorporations transparent and cohesive. With his latest album “Kindred”, Hummel adds the Berlin School era of Krautrock (and more specifically its close, more electronically minded sibling, Kosmische Musik) to his long list of inspirations. Hummel does so by utilizing more of the analog synthesizer sound-bed-of-choice of artists like Cluster, Ashra, and one of his biggest influences, Tangerine Dream. By mixing all these elements, Hummel is using his own history as well as the tradition of his influences to create an album that is on one hand somewhat future-retro but on the other undeniably fresh. “Kindred” could very well be the album that Hummel was born to create. An amalgam of the new and the old with a no apologies level of honesty and emotion. Each song a journey to some landscape we've never seen before." Listen here

Rusty Egan Presents Shock R.E.R.B 2010.mp4

YouTube via RustyEgan | November 07, 2010 | 5 likes, 0 dislikes
via Steve Turnidge
"Rusty Egan and Steve Strange brought you the Blitz Club in 1980, the cradle that not only spawned the musical soundtrack to a generation but also the styles, fashions and very fabric of the 80's. Thirty years may seem a long time to wait before launching a record label of the same name but the sound of the Blitz is as fresh today as it was all those years ago on a side street off Covent Garden. For the first release we head back to 1983. R.E.R.B is a studio collaboration between two pillars of the New Romantic movement; Richard James Burgess who coined the very phrase 'New Romantic', producer of the first two Spandau Ballet albums, founder of Einstein A Go Go Landscape, drummer and all around producer God and Rusty Egan, co founder of the Blitz Club, member of the The Skids & Visage and the DJ who first brought the sounds of the synthesizer into the mainstream. Did we mention that Rusty is a drummer too' R.E. is Rusty and R.B. is Richard. They are two drummers who once got together and not only made one of the first true electro records but also one catchy, beat-heavy number. The original from 1983 is present and correct in its original form, arguably sounding more relevant to a 2010 audience than it did to a 1983 one. It's already been bootlegged twice in the past few years. On the flip side Rusty dons his remix gloves and extends, prods and recreates a 2010 version. Big synths, electro grooves, HiQ and chunky floor-stomping pianos all the way."

Carbon111 - Stealing The Sun

via Carbon111

"Stealing The Sun is the album I've been wanting to make for the last ten years. Filled with a wide spectrum of synth textures and embellished by my voice, it's an exploration of epiphany and change viewed through the lens of modern electronic pop.

Diverse elements like the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft, Native American traditions and Greek mythology combine into something strange, personally engaging, and hopefully 'greater than the sum of its parts'"

"F.U. (aka Gary Chang and Anthony Baldino) makes electronic music of a different variety.... FU sets its course an intelligent yet eclectic path, gathering much of its influences from world music, r&b and ambient electronic music. Glitchmeister Anthony Baldino grew up in New York playing bass and golf, and now has the knack of turning his laptop into various musical sound sources. Gary Chang's film music past looms large in his experience as a sonic painter and espresso coffee drinker.. Together they make music that says, 'F.U.!'"

Xeroid Entity & The Tangent Project / November 6

"One Thousand Pulses presents
Xeroid Entity & The Tangent Project / November 6

The members of xeroid entity are Howard Moscovitz, Bill Fox, and Greg Waltzer. Combined they have more than 70 years of experience making electronic music. They all program their own sounds, and refuse to be bound by conventional scales or rhythms. The parts are freely improvised, which allows for maximum expressiveness and interaction between group members while avoiding predictability. Much of it is ambient in nature, without a discernable beat. When the group does play rhythmically based music, it is often polyrhythmic in flavor. The results can be subtle and spacey , noisy without being harsh, dynamic yet continuous. xeroid entity is constantly exploring new musical territory by going beyond the barriers of standard conventions, classic Euro EM practitioners merging (Berlin) old school with (PA/New Jersey) new school.

The interlocking sonic wormholes of The Tangent Project, a duo of Harrison McKay (guitar) and Jeff Coulter (electronics), travel the same spaceways as the European masters as well, breaking bread with established traditions while simultaneously fomenting new frontiers. Dense sequencer patterns collide with slowly expansive chord clusters within the Project's vast vocabulary of sounds, exploiting the genre's broad history as it unveils new, contemporary ideas and avenues. Both The Tangent Project and Xeroid Entity vividly breathe life into the ghosts of Tangerine Dreamers past.

"I decided to record my little DC motor before it gets mounted in it’s eventual home, my Harmonograph table.

I started by playing midi notes into my headphones and simultaneously recorded the tuning of the motor to a major scale. I got two octaves out of it.

Then I brought the material into final cut and started making a composition with it. You may recognize the tune, it’s from the first eight bars of my music-box composition on Day 191.

"Igor Stravinsky's Petrushka done electronically ( or Classitronically as I like to call it) in an Isao Tomita style.

This is a selection of highlights from the full piece. The whole piece is over 22 minutes long but this gives you a good idea of the contents & sounds in 5 and a half mins.

If you are familair with Tomitas works then you will recognise that parts of it are similar in style and sound to that of his "Pictures at an Exhibition" which is what I was aiming for, though Petrushka is quite a different piece of music from the Mussorgsky work and the full version sounds more like that than the cut up version here.

This was adapted from the 3 part piano version with the Shrovetide fair and Charlatans booth also from a piano version added at the begining, so while it's not the absolute full orchestral version, its more than the normal 3 part piano one.

Petrushka is the story of 3 puppets that are brought to life by a magician in a travelling fair. Petrushka, the lead puppet falls in love with a female puppet but is eventually killed by his love rival (that is a very short and simple explanation).

The whole piece was done on hardware synths and effects processors with only a tiny fraction being samples which is just the choir parts. It took about 4 months to put together and will form part of a CD to be released in 2011 which will include the Rite of Spring also by Stravinsky.

The equipment used was a DOT.com/Doepfer Analogue modular synth, Arturia Origin, Creamware Prodyssey and Pro 12, Roland V-Synth GT, Eventide Modfactor and Pitchfactor, EHX Cathedral, Digitech Timebender, Line 6 M13 stompbox modeller, EHX Small stone phaser, Cubase 5 running on a i7 PC with Windows 7 64bit.

The animations where taken from Winamp Milkdrop 2 plugin and recorded using FRAPS ( and I forget to move the mouse cusor in most of the screen grabs DOH!).

Hope you enjoy it, please rate, comment and subscribe :-)"

sonicbrat - in and out of time

via sonicbrat on the forum:
"After a hiatus due to busy work schedule in theatre productions, I’m finally back. Here’s the latest release, which is a recording of an approximately 1 hour long improvisation on the acoustic piano and laptop with live looping (RC50), processing (max/msp + various effects), processed field recordings and some synthesis. This recording was originally an improvisation exercise for a contemporary dance performance “The Man In The Center” by T.H.E. Dance Company. However, the music was consequently not used for the actual performance. So here it is, self-released as a free download. Hope you guys will like it.

If you can't view flash, click HERE for the html download site."

It's an Analog world...by Alain Hubert

YouTube via AlainHubert | March 21, 2010

"Another short synthesizer music piece, by me...Only one of the keyboards shown is not a real analog but a virtual one, can you spot which one?
This music video was a tribute to my synthesizer music mentors: Giorgio Moroder, Jean-Michel Jarre, Wendy Carlos, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, just to name a few... And of course Robert A. Moog and Walter Sear for bringing analog synthesizers to the music scene.
Thanks for watching."

Synths used:
Minimoog Voyager Old School
Korg Mono/Poly
Korg DW8000
Alesis Ion (I know it's only a virtual analog, but it's a really good one)
Boss DR-110 analog drum machine

"El joven Kaleth, aprendiz del dancehall y la vía rastafari, finalmente está listo para dominar el paso secreto y centenario del dancehall que acerca a quienes lo conocen a la reina del Pum pum shot. The Simonsound

Tour De Mars by The Simonsound
www.thesimonsound.com
"Words can be no substitute for the aural experience, but if you will have
words, The Simonsound¹s first album, ³Reverse Engineering², offers an
intriguing variety of sounds, including ¹50s and ¹60s-inspired space music,
mood music for film and TV, haunting vocal tracks, and switched-on cover
versions of classics realised on the Moog synthesiser.

Matt and Simon both cite Dick Hyman¹s crazy Moog take on James Brown¹s ³Give
it up or Turn it Loose² as a big inspiration, representing the perfect
meeting of experimental electronics and solid rhythm section. They created
their own homage to it with a take on the classic b-boy anthem, ³It¹s Just
Begun² by The Jimmy Castor Bunch, replacing the original¹s soulful vocals,
gritty rhythm and horn sections with heavy Moog synthesiser and electronic
sounds that place you firmly in outer space. Their interpretation of Bob
James¹ much sampled classic, ³Nautilus², also adds vibraphone, treated
percussion and tape effects. Meanwhile ³Baker's Dozen² uses the sound of a
cork being popped from an empty bottle of gin as its main instrument, taking
inspiration from the work of BBC Radiophonic Workshop composer John Baker,
famous for taking everyday sounds and creating music with them. The
Simonsound didn¹t rely solely on machines, inviting vocalist Debbie Clare to
collaborate on several tracks, resulting in ³Bad Love², ³Between the Wake
and the Sleep² and ³Call of the Siren². Further tracks on the album explore
the kind of instrumental music you might have heard in the background of
Œ60s and Œ70s cult TV shows or adverts."

You can find an interview including some pics and video at work ethic here. Also see http://www.thesimonsound.com/ for EMS VCS3 ringtones and Moog Voyager patches.

Unfolding Systems

video here
"Vincent Houzé © 2008
Vincent created and animated this beautiful evolving machine to the sound of the music with heavy use of Houdini's CHOPs, L-Systems and copy stamping. All the animation is completely procedural (no keyframes, with exception of the camera movement), and driven by the audio track which was also created by Vincent. Mathematical expressions, and dynamic simulations were also used to drive some of the animation."

The Wide Blue Room

YouTube via JohnLRice | August 28, 2010

"This is a modular synthesizer "drone" (a dark ambient drone, I guess)presented with a poem by my late sister Cathy. (R.I.P. xxoo)

Drones are best listened to on good quality full range sound systems as they are not about melodies, harmonies, rhythms and flashy dynamics but about deep complex textures and subtle changes.

I think some poems are like drones, and often are not so much about predictable rhymes and quaint but obvious descriptions of nature's beauty or lustful passions but are about deep complex thoughts that are stated . . . elusively.

I hope you enjoy listening to my drone while you ponder the poetry of my sister and watch the images I've chosen.

It's not so much about figuring out what this video is "supposed to mean", (I'm still not sure about a lot of it ;-), it's more for thinking about what it means to YOU . . . or . . . just sit back and think of something else while it plays.

Thank you for watching, commenting and rating!"

As clean as fire was produced via overdubs of modular synthesizer, one monophonic line at a time. This means that each sound you hear was patched and created specifically for that moment in the composition. As clean as fire employs a Risset rhythm, which is a type of audio illusion to give the impression of a constantly accelerating tempo. Try tapping your finger to the beat.

I anticipate a Fall 2010 release for 'A Funneled Stone'"
